I've just been looking at a new close ratio gearbox and at £315 seemed a reasonable price for a European made box. It's obviously only a 4 speed box and it's got me thinking about the price of a 5 speed box. At between £800-1100 for different made ones is the one extra gear and cog on the Christmas tree worth all that extra cost? It's basically an extra £500-800 ( depending on which box you buy ) for the extra cogs. I'm not an engineer or in the manufacturering industry and maybe I'm missing something but is it really that much more to produce a 5 speed box?

Maybe they built in a slush fund to pay for all the broken ones.

I was lucky enough last week to get my hands on a new to the market place 5 speed gearbox, I wasn't allowed to take pictures, and it's been roadtested and track tested at the moment, it's made by a company who make gears for high torque applications mainly tractors, they look spot on and no breakages to report as yet and the price tag I was quoted was under £500.

I'm happy with mine if I'm honest. The question is though, are they really that much more to produce?
