Just received the registration book for my scooter from those nice people at the DVLA. Quite pleased as it was my first attempt. It is completely random though. It begins AFW, and I'd be interested to know where the number originated from in the first place.

Thanks for that Chris. If it doesn't like going up hills I'll know why.
Where did you find the information by the way?

sorry- missed the last bit. I've got an old AA handbook (1961) they used to list all the old letter codes in them. Was quite interesting although I do know I need to get out more....

I'm sure you will be really surprised by this, but you can get it from the internet too. http://www.drivearchive.co.uk/regcodes.htm
I'm sure quite a few on here can remember the codes for their local licensing authority, and maybe a few of the adjacent ones too.

That's a good one Warts. Thanks for that. I did find a site after Chris came up trumps. It wasn't that one though.

I think they just pick anything at random that suits the year.
My Li that I registered in December came back with a Norwich number - LCL
