So you've been to the IOW, Newark, Kelso etc too :( :(

Riding hundreds of miles on a Lambretta or geared/classic Vespa isn't a "sensible" option and that's the point (or it was in the past).......Doing it the hard way and pushing the limits of the scooter and rider (or finding it's limits in many cases) is what it's all about......for me anyway.
Don't get me wrong, I too enjoy the challenges presented by riding my Lambretta but why do you assume that every geared scooter has been ridden hundreds of miles to get there? Many will be fairly local and the owners wouldn't dream of riding more that 50 miles. The GTS rider that you ignore might well have got up early and ridden 300 miles to get there that morning...just saying, the challenge might be different but it's still a challenge.

A scooter is a style of two-wheeled motor vehicle traditionally defined by characteristics such as a step-through frame, wheels less than 16" in diameter, and an engine located below the rider and to the rear.

Taken from a government site, a moped no greater then 50cc and required pedals which was changed later

Vespa World Days is a case in point. The Brits mostly arrive on GTSs. They park them up as they arrive and don't start them again until it's time to go home. The Europeans trailer their classics there then ride them round and around and around endlessly before putting them back on a trailer and going home again.

The run went well. The ride out was nearly 100 miles, a few break downs but that's classic scoots for you. I don't like see the modern scoots on a rally anyway, however, I've had plenty of modern scoots for riding to work on but I never took of them to a rally it just didn't seem right to me. Each to their own etc.
