Painting Engine Casings

Afternoon,
A mate of mine has asked me what is the best paint for painting his engine casings. Is standard paint and etch primer good enough or should he use a high temp paint?
If he uses high temp paint is it best to seal with high temp lacquer?
I know powder coating is prob the best way to go but he wants to paint them, has anyone done it and had decent results?
Any tips greatly appreciated.

I think your friend is probably mad. Powder coat is by far the best solution and you could probably do it in a variety of colours if you want. I'm not sure I've ever seen an engine that's been painted by hand.

I did a Hillman Imp engine by hand once in 1975.

High temp paint and clear would be fine, make sure that the clear is high temp though as it can go brown in colour.

To paint the case, wouldn't you need to get it pretty clean to start with, or it wont stick? If you've gone to the expense of having it cleaned to a high standard, wouldn't it be just a few sheckles more to get them powdercoated?

powder coat is the best covering but this will require all the seals and "o" rings to be removed, as the powder coated is finished off in a high temp' oven.

On a total bare casing it's a no-brainer to get it powder coated, if the engine's already built then painting is your only viable option. As to whether to use hi-temp paint, I've used normal paint before with good results.

i,ve used this stuff with nice results .....aluma blast by eastwood from frost autorestorations
its a great product

Etch primer and pj1 matt black worked for me not lacaured tho
