Stripping an old Rally 200 engine down tonight & the old piston has scribed cross hatch markings scribed with a large dot punch to the centre of each - and these are all around the piston (see below pics)... never seen this before & just curious as to what purpose they serve?

Old school idea for increasing lubrication. Not often seen anymore.

Probably not a dot punch, might distort the piston. More like a drill bit. Nice little oil collector spot. Most just have the cross hatch in a smaller pattern.
That's not going anywhere...
