I've had it explained to me more than once.....


but this whole varator / rollers / clutch / springs relationship hurts my head.....


anyone able to clearly explain!!!? :?: :? :shock:

unlike a geared scooter......an auto is always operating within its powerband..............
you may have noticed paul that an auto screams as it sets off..........
speed is maintained by the variator/rollers etc...........which control the pully drive belt...................................
all this simply means is that it never dips out of its power band ,unlike a geared scoot...........

err i was gonna explain it but a pic paints a thousand words
imagine a lammy engine with a 13t front and 50t rear it will acelerate like f@@k but be very revvy at speed or a
20t front and a 42t rear wont pull very well from lowdown but would have a good speed top end but would struggle to keep the power an auto adjusts the sprocket size automatically to suit the speed and load on the engine lighter rollers also get thrown out quicker so the acceleration is faster but at a loss of top enf and vice versa ,roller weights can be mixed to give the best of both worlds or rider weight simple :D

as i understand it the front pulley is operated by the weights to force the two halves together causing the belt to rise on the pulley increasing the gearing ,the weight of the weights controls the revs at which the variator starts to change the gearing ,lighter weights mean more revs to change the gearing ,also at the rear is the clutch which is operated by centrifugal force ,usually contains three shoes that are held in place by springs again the revs at which the clutch bites is controlled by these springs ,behind the clutch is the rear pulley the two halves are pushed together by a larger spring on the clutch shaft so when the front pulley is pushed together the rear pulley will be pushed apart making the rear pulley gradually smaller and the front larger as revs / road speed rises

it is a bit tricky though to get the right combination of variator weights/clutch spring and centre spring ratings as you need to be able to hit the power band ,a change in tune or pipe can make a previous set up useless
