With a weekend of better weather I've somehow managed to free a couple of hours today.

First step was to strip off the mudguard and the cruddy legshields.

Image

This time I've taken the brake pedal off as I'm terrified to scratch the recently painted legshields, they fit so much better and all the holes are in the right places.

Image

Got the mudguard back on. I'm keeping everything loose just now till I'm sure it'll all go together properly.

Image

Now begins the game of fitting floor channels.

Image

As with most things in La La Lambretta land, any day that ends a little further forward in the project has to be treated as a result!

Cold out today but still managed to spend a couple of hours outside rolling around on the rug swearing and trying to fit the runner strips on the legshields. Three hours must be some kind or record to fit a dozen screws and nuts...

Image

I think I know now why I used the Serveta style mats the last time. I hate fitting these things. They're a pain to bend to the right shape without scratching something and if the alignment isn't really good you have to go back a couple of steps to get it right. I must have lost about 30 M4 wavy washers, the skin off every knuckle and about half a pint of blood...

Image

At the close of play I've got 3/4 of it done, with only the inner front ones to sort out as the screws I have simply aren't long enough to get through the runner and the mudguard. It might just be that the fibre glass mudguard is thicker than a metal one but I need another 5mm to get a nut on.

With the arrival of some slightly longer screws and a couple of better days, I've been out in the garden, fortunately not gardening (much - I've had to trim that pigging holly).

I've managed to get the final bits of the bloody (literally) floor board runners done.

Image

I've also got the horncast fitted properly, considering this was all together before painting the fit has given me some issues, I had to loosen of the mudguard to get it to fit and then tighten everything up again.

Image

At the backend I've changed the plastic bushes on the R1 shock for ones from Lambretta Upgrades. These fit much better both in the shock and on the mountings.

Image

I've started to work back on the wiring, I've built in a fuse holder and a battery isolator switch, largely because I don't want to replace my expensively renovated original ignition switch with one of the ones that has the extra wire for switching. I've yet to decide how and where I'm going to mount that. I did have a blonde half hour trying to figure out why the brake light was on solid before I remembered I'd not refitted the brake pedal...

I've got the SIP speedo up and running.

Image

It's working in most respects though I did have some problems initially when the bike was running as it was reading 33km/h ticking over on the stand and was a bit flakey in the menus. Doing some reading fitting a resistor plug and cap sorted that.

I've spliced the brown wire into one of the yellows from the stator but still not getting a reading on the rev counters. Not sure what's going on there. It's irritating but not the end of the world for now.

When fitting the legshields I'd taken the brake pedal off so treated it to a wire brushing, a coat of barbecue paint and a new rubber. The wife even lent a hand to tighten the cable!!

Image

I now feel the end is in sight. I even started fitting the badges. Just for comparison here's a Scootopia badge versus a ScootRS one you can draw your own conclusion about which looks and fits better.

Image

Fitting the badges gave my missus an opportunity to take the p155 - she says she knew I'd end up resorting to hitting it with a hammer...

Image

But the legshield badges and sticker are done.

Following a crisis of confidence with the Racemans and the ScootRS rims I decide that I'm going to fit SIP rims. I got the tyres fitted locally with only one gouged rim and broke their scooter wheel machine, don't think I'll take any more there. A couple of hours spare after tea and with it only spitting with rain, I get out in the garden and dig the bike out and resume my masochistic relationship with this rebuild.

I had dug out a couple of hubs and got them blasted and coated, the rear is an SIL and the front is ScootRS.

Image

I've fitted the studs and done the bearings and seals in the front hub.

I decide to start with the front since I want to look at slight binding issue on the front disk. I strip it out and find this to be caused by an over tightened static pad, an easy fix.

Image

Next I try the disk on the ScootRS disk hub half only to find that it doesn't run free on the pins, I take the circlip out and it's no better. Out comes the emery cloth and I clean up the pins until I'm happy with the way it moves on the disk. I start to assemble the hub, with all the spacers in the right places but then find that as soon as the nut gets finger tight the hub half starts to bind on the back plate rim and if it's anything like tight it locks solid.

Oh well.

I decide to take the studs out of the old original hub half. Bit of heat, double nut first one out in two minutes flat. Second one - bit of heat, double nut and it moves about 1/8th of a turn and locks up, nothing will shift it. I leave it for now and move on. Next one, bit of heat, double nut - shears right off - brilliant. Out comes the drill.

After an hour and a half careful drilling in 0.5mm increments I get to the point where I start to see threads. Judicious application of the lump hammer and the cold chisel and I eventually manage to collapse what is left of the stud and get it out.

Image

Running the tap down there's still enough meat to get a decent thread on it.

Image

Two done and the dark defeated me. The neighbours must be fed up with the banging and swearing anyway ...

Will go go back to it tomorrow.
