Re: Stainless v Mild Steel Exhausts
We set up my own TS1/225 scooter with exhaust a) mild steel, 1.5mm, and set out ten thermocouples along the length of the exhaust and run for an hour on the dyno under measured slight load. Repeat with exhaust b) Stainless steel 0.8/1mm. Both exhausts running the same AFR readings (at the start of s...

Re: ethanol, detonation, egt's?
Welcome Adam :-). Coaster, Agree about stock levels held entirely, but most tanks are installed pretty much the same sizes, even the really old tanks (2* days even) as the tanks are installed (underground as a rule) to allow for fuel stock expansion (i.e. at a docks a new filling station built. inst...

Re: ethanol, detonation, egt's?
Hi Dapper, from what I can establish ethanol stabiliser helps against moisture absorption, corrosion inhibitor and supposedly ash preventor to keep down carbon build up upon combustion. what it doesn't do is alter the alcohol content therefore does nothing (chemically) to prevent detonation. Dave 41...

Re: Stainless v Mild Steel Exhausts
...and from testing, I'd err on the side of mild steel from an engine reliability point of view. It may need removing once a year for a wire brush and paint up, but at least it'll last a year. And a car / 4T exhaust cannot be compared as different environment. S

Re: Silencers
Thats not that simple. In relation to an absorption muffler (silencer), although most 2T exhausts use a common ID per CC grouping, it's difficult to just say "A 125cc Vespa should have an ID of X". I would work to a specific, calculated size per engine spec and allow a tolerance of +5% dep...

Re: ethanol, detonation, egt's?
Pot luck but shouldn't exceed 5% currently, but I would beg to differ on some supplies but difficult to prove. As much as I can find out, this "generally" is going to be increased to 10% next year. It's not flat across the board though, it depends on retail sales volume by retailer/ site. ...

Re: Silencers
The silencer on its own, and the exhaust as a whole, are both 2t or 4t specific. And every 2t silencer "should" be individual cylinder specific let alone 2t specific. Simon

Re: ethanol, detonation, egt's?
If detonation is happening then the egt will have a lower temperature. The fuel is igniting way before the ignition point which causes the heat that normally goes out the exhaust port (and gives you the egt) to soak the head/ cylinder but mainly the piston creating holes (mainly) or seizure. And if ...

ethanol, detonation, egt's?
Following on from Simon fitting his egt I thought I'd just add a footnote that's scooter rather than just Lambretta related, and throw it out there for those of you that have had ethanol related damage (allegedly, of course), and those that know more. (Sticky?). If this has been addressed, please po...
