Re: exhaust port timings
where were the barrels purchased?this is a manufacturing fault and if 4 barrels from the same source had the same notch flaw then they are not fit for purpose and should not be sold the tuner has tried to machine out the fault without realising that the flaw makes the barrels scrap from new,why wer...

Re: exhaust port timings
So how many barrels did he actually "tune" 4, yes four, quattro, quattre, vier. All of them have the same problem; the bottom of the exhaust port is about 4mm too low. I'm not going to knock this guy as he really tried, lost money and then gave me a full refund. To be honest I fee feel gu...

Re: exhaust port timings
I've solved the problem.
Got a refund and spoke to Richard Taylor of gt186 fame.
I'll be ordering my kit next week after he's checked out my crankcase porting.
I feel happier now.

Re: exhaust port timings
Actually, it's more significant than I'd guessed. From 10degrees before bdc and 10 degrees after the piston only moves 0.9mm (with a 58mm crank) so it is approximately fully open for 20 degrees blowing spent charge through a turbulent orifice when a well made barrel would be blowing through an almos...

Re: exhaust port timings
Is this bloke a actual tuner/dealer or just a keen amateur? if he's a dealer then he should not be buggering things up on his second attempt, as for his third? if its covered the top ring ok- I'd run it but then I'm just a keen amateur ;-) Sort of half way between the two. He runs a small business ...

Re: exhaust port timings
The chap who tuned my barrel is now onto his third attempt (it's costing him a lot of time and money now and I'm a softy at heart). He has sent me the attached photo to show his latest attempt. Is it good enough? Remember that this is a £160 barrel and piston, not a £600 fancy kit. In my mind I have...

Re: Stainless v Mild Steel Exhausts
So it isn't "COMPLETE HOGWASH ",stainless steel exhausts actually do hold the heat more than mild steel. No, it's not hogwash. Stainless conducts heat at about 30% the rate of mild (depending on what type of stainless and mild you're comparing, but they're all broadly similar) and radiate...

Re: Stainless v Mild Steel Exhausts
I don't disagree at all that stainless will run hotter, in fact I know it will. I'm just saying that the % is difficult to be sure about without a raft of tests in various conditions. In wet weather I'd bet my left gonad that the difference would be almost immeasurable. Am I right in thinking that s...

Re: Stainless v Mild Steel Exhausts
Shiny stuff, whether stainless or not will retain heat more than matt black. This is called its emissivity factor. What is known as an ideal black body radiates heat at the highest possible rate; factor of 1. Polished stainless is about as bad as it gets. And has an emissivity factor around 0.1. Of ...
