If you connected the wires the other way around would it have worked ? That was kind of where the problem started. The starter motor has a thrown pinion, and it will only work in one direction. Reversing the polarity would make the electric motor turn in the opposite direction, but the pinion would...

Thanks for the spectulation, but I'd rather you hadn't spotted it. Yes, it is an electric starter. The flywheel was an original AF lightweight item, with the starter wheel from a Piaggio Sfera machined into the face. Nice.
