The only time i wouldnt use a bottom chain guide is if you use a high quality chain like Iwis and depending on its use , it is checked regularly.

If it is too fat, then it might foul on the bolts that retain the swivel base. This might stop the gears selecting properly.

Also if in the photo your not already pulling the clutch in then the lever is to far forward, its already at 90 degrees to the cable , undo the cable and adjust the lever back one or two notches to give some angle on the lever before its pulled .

For a start you have put the gear swivel base ( bolts to casing) the wrong way around , it sits so its sticking out from the side case slightly.
