Ideally you need the correct piston for the barrel, if you've melted the piston crown I don't think you'll be able to see which letter it was??? Perhaps you could have it measured by a grown up and work it out from there? As for carb settings......... last 172 reed I played with had 40 slide, 50 idl...

I think the barrel should be stamped with the corresponding letter mate, all down to tolerances I think.

Never had an issue with Shell, in fact I seek it out, mind I only use the super not the fuelsave cak.

Turning clockwise advances timing so if you've turned your stator by 5 degrees you're now running at 21 degrees BTDC, not good.

On another note, mine lost no top end but gained bottom end on a 28mm, slightly better on go juice too.

Had 21/68 on mine and it went like s**t off a chrome stick (with a Taffy Goldline).........
21/68 = 3.24:1
22/68 = 3.09:1
23/67 = 2.91:1
I'd say that yes you are a bit overgeared.
