If it’s overheated previously and it now runs crisp with what seems like a bigger MJ than needed, it sounds like an air leak - maybe establish everything’s absolutely sealed and then see how it runs.
I find using carb cleaner to check/find leaks is super quick and efficient.

Blow by on piston indicates worn piston/rings and so probably sloppy piston in bore. Long shot... If you're using the standard carb, could a collar be machined that would allow you to fit a forward facing / horizontal Lambretta rubber elbow and breath sweet filter arrangement?
