Re: Points! ! ! PLEASE HELP!

First thing I'd check is that the flywheel hasn't moved on its taper. Check that the woodruff key is in good condition and that the flywheel is torqued up correctly. Remeber that altering your points gap can affect your timing too.

Quandary

Had a seize after downpipe came adrift and tried to wet 'n dry but loads of piston slap, so needs a rebore and oversize piston. Got the new OS piston and stripped engine out and top end down. The kit is a 185cc Dave Betts (RIP) tuned SR type kit and he put a boost port in the cylinder with a window ...

Re: Points! ! ! PLEASE HELP!

Can't see how you can set the points with the flywheel off :?: :!: You have to set the points with the flywheel on, and turn it until the points open due to the cam on the flywheel.

Re: Points! ! ! PLEASE HELP!

The misfiring could well be down to the condenser failing. Change that an look at all the soldered joints. There may be a dry joint (dull grey). I'd re-solder all of them. Also check that all the earth tags on the stator are tight. Also look for any chafing on any of the wires. Lastly, did you take ...

Re: exhaust keeps leaking

Leave the running boards off until you're sure it's all OK. It's worth taking your time over fitting any exhaust and ensuring that it is not being distorted/stressed when all the brackets/downpipe is bolted up. I know it may take time fettling but it will extend the life of the exhaust.

Re: Cast iron VS Aluminium cylinder

You can match your cylinder to you inlet/ exhaust manifolds quite easily with a dremel. You can also open up the transfers and smooth them and match them to your casing the same way. Yours looks no different to mine when I bought it and cleaned up quite nicely.

Re: Heat seizes...

And your likely to get piston slap after you clean up the piston too. The problem is the trace of ally left on the cylinder which then, when hot binds on the piston again so causing another nip up.

Re: exhaust keeps leaking

Hi Dru, just to let you know that I recently had a parting of my ScootRS exhaust manifold flange from the rest of the downpipe causing a seize and a F**ked piston   The exhaust manifold flange was still bolted to the cylinder, but the downpipe cracked around the weld and was spotted 30 ya...

Re: piston shims ~ needed ? or potential hazard ?

Couldn't you fit a wider japanese small end bearing to take up the gap? Or is this a serious No No?

Re: exhaust keeps leaking

It's worth checking that the exhaust manifold face is perfectly flat, that you use solid copper gaskets, and that the brass nuts/washers don't bottom out on the threads, thereby leaving a gap through which you can leak. If you have a machine shop you can go to, get the face of the exhaust manifold m...
