would love to understand the complex relationship between ignition timing, compression ratios, exhaust and port timings when aiming for high BHP, from what i understand seems to be a case of suck it and see

i can see a situation in the next 20 years when we may need to have this knowledge, i wonder what people do with very early motorbikes made in the first 30 years of the last century

deck height is measured where the piston finishes at tdc in relation to the barrell 1mm can make a difference of 5 degs on the port timings

unless he knew the deck clearance beforehand the port timings are an approximation anyway
