As long as you don't over do the copperslip, a smear works just as well. Too much can contaminate the seals. As you say, you are just trying to decouple the pad/caliper slightly. Porsche sell a proper little pad to glue on the back. ££'s, but with 4 or 6 pot calipers, I guess cheap insurance. But if...

Did you try with the piston the bench like in your photo, then push the cylinder down onto it? Maybe with something to help alignment, chunk of wood? Or gentle application of a g cramp?
