If you have a lathe, or access to one, i'd machine a taper on a steel rod with a threaded end. The larger the diameter of the rod will help with stability.

I'd check your plug colour and do a few plug-chops to check your jetting and if you've got the inclination a pressure test would be wise.....

Too much oil ? The fully synthetic is designed to cling to the barrel walls, too much of a high percentage and you'll gunk your rings up :?

can also happen if not giving it enough rev's :D

Quite a few Lambrettas are now running as low as 2% with no adverse affects.

Take it out for a decent ride....50 plus miles The smoke could just be the lubricants you used to build the motor up with burning off! If it's still smoking after some mileage strip out the top end and the crank. Check your drive side main bearing is fully home and seated properly. Fit a new halite...
