For the record mine has been on 18 degrees for years. No issue. Piston still un-dented.
Its usually bad jetting or too big squish clearance causing all the problems.

As always it depends on what you use the scooter for. For me the only benefit of reeds is that a bigger carb can be used. You could get away with putting that piston back in. If you have a new ring in your garage, then fit it but that would have to be way worse for me to waste my money on a new piston. Spark plug will be ruined so you will need a new one of those for sure. The colour of the piston crown says it all.......

If fitting a reed block makes you happy. It will at least sound nice and if jetted well at low throttle will be more responsive. And you can add a bigger carb later.

Fitting a 60mm crank could work well with all the packer on the head.

Yours is a mixture screw, so either your carb has a blockage or you need a bigger pilot jet. I would fit a 60 pilot jet. When it doesn't return to tickover, is it after it has been running at high rom for a while? If so there is a different problem. For a reed block to be worth the expense and effor...

What carb is it? Maybe its an air screw not a mixture screw

To be 18 degrees is assumed to be for a 57mm crank. A 60mm would need to be half a degree less for the equivalent timing.

The more advanced the timing is the more power it will have. 18 degrees is the safe choice.

If you give me some measurements, I'll do some sums for how I think to pack the barrel for max torque.
