By no means a expert but "R" type plug but also a cap seem to have made things a lot better, in the end i got AC power from the back end rather than the headset, just seemed to be getting interferance from anything and everything in the headset.... so after a fiddle with the speedo cable t...

Many thanks gents, this should have been my first port of call really, bad day, dodgy lamy electrics and 6 year old daughter "helping" me all afternoon....
