I've got P2 forks with a Primavera headset, and i used standard P2 cable, and it works, dont know if that will help you though, sorry.

i agree with hungdog. see if you can get a compression test done. i like to see over 100psi. is it difficult to start? other wise, rings are cheap but a piston and rebore are pretty cheap too and you then have a solid base line to work off of.
