Head off barrel off. Piston will not move beyond bottom dead centre. Bore and rings OK.
Gearbox casing off everything looks OK to me.

Easiest bit 1st flywheel off nothing untoward there. Next step gearbox cover off but that'll have wait until tomorrow.

getting confused now... 1) can you turn the engine by the flywheel with no problems (i.e. no noise or catching/ jamming)? Can the head/barrel be taken off without removing the engine?
No difference if fan guard is on or off. Could it be a broken ring?

If the top end turns over ok by turning the flywheel then I'd question if it is not an issue with the kickstart or transmission. I've had a clutch circlip pop out and cause issue. It might be worth having the side casing off for a peak before starting to strip the top end. Adam This is something I....

No it's far more serious. Seems to me to be a broken ring or something. The scraping noise is only heard when using kick start though and the piston appears to move freely when turning the flywheel. It's going to need a strip down to see what it is and it's not something I'm relishing. When it does ...
