Had a similar problem. Turned out there was a slight cast burr in the bottom of the hole the xmas tree sits in. Cleaned the burr (2 minute job) and fitted perfectly.

All a bit strange as the engine was a 50 year old Italian casing which had several gearboxes fitted previously ?

It would appear that wire from the brake switch to back light may be shorting to earth. The back light unit may also be the problem. Try disconnecting the brake light wire in the rear light housing. If the lights still dim then it's the wire (or brake switch), if the lights are good have a look in t...

In WT's defence:

The Avanti's aren't a standard reed kit, so a standard Avanti piston will not have the reed holes. If an Avanti kit was changed to a reed valve then the piston shown would probably be suitable...........best to give Ron a call though.

Similar thread on the LCGB a couple of weeks ago.......the consensus was don't touch them......but a phone call to AF would be advised.
